Personal hunting styles must be taken into account when finding the right quiver. Make sure that you find a hip quiver that’s durable and rugged enough to withstand the potentially harsh weather conditions that you may be hunting in.
Hip quivers are designed to be on the side of the archer’s dominant hand although some can be worn on the other side if desired. The quiver can be tilted to fletch the arrow forward or back. This type of style makes it easy for archers to find the type of hip quiver which will suit them.
Here are the key features to look out for.
Traditional hip quivers would carry as many arrows as you could fit inside. Now that hip quivers have tubes, the capacity depends on the diameter of your arrow compared to the diameter of the tubers. Some tubes will only be suitable for hunting arrows and will be way too short and narrow for broadheads.
Usually, the capacity depends on the price of the quiver. The more you spend, the more room you’ll get. Anywhere from 12 to 24 arrows is decent capacity.
If you have a significant amount of hunting or archery accessories, it’s always beneficial to choose a quiver that has one or more pockets for extra storage.
These pockets are great for holding small accessories like string wax, a range finder, bow releases, extra arrowheads, stringers, car keys, mobile phones, credit cards and more!
Make sure you give plenty of consideration to the model’s size. The hip quiver needs to large enough to hold several arrows comfortably. Plus, you will need extra space to carry additional items.
If you’re buying for yourself, consider your height. If you’re a tall person, you will need a quiver that’s long enough for your arms to comfortably grab an arrow at any minute. If you’re short, you will need a quiver that’s also shorter in diameter so your body isn’t overwhelmed by the length. This rule also applies if you’re shopping for a child.
Some quivers are sold with lids which is a perfect solution for a hunter who needs to keep their arrows dry and protected from harsh outdoor elements. The best way a hunter can protect themselves from the elements is by wearing a camouflaged model. Fortunately, modern quivers are sold in a variety of colors including camo.
The materials that are used to manufacture your quiver must be long-lasting and unlikely to break during an intense hunt or nail-biting archery tournament.
Look out for durable materials such as heavy-duty neoprene, heavy-duty polyester or Ballistix coatings.
You may want to consider a universal belt for your hip quiver. Most quivers don’t have a belt and simply attach to the belt you’re wearing or through a loop in your jeans.
Belts are useful if, for example, you’re going straight to the range from work or the gym because sometimes the shorts or pants you’re wearing won’t have a belt. That’s when a universal and adjustable belt will make all the difference!
Hip quivers are an excellent choice for hunting because you can easily see how many arrows you have left during shooting. This eliminates the need to count or feel on your back to see how many arrows you have left. You’ll also be able to see whether you have any broken fletchings or nocks.
The more you spend, the quieter your hip quiver will be. If you’re a target shooter, this won’t be an issue. If you’re hunting, you can’t wear a noisy quiver.
I’ll never understand why, but some archers choose not to wear a quiver. Still not convinced? Here are a few reasons why you should use a hip quiver;
Having a hip quiver allows you to carry around several arrows at once. If you’re hunting, it’s important to have your arms free to preserve energy.
While you’re hunting you can detach your hip quiver using the belt loop and hang it on a tree that’s next to your treestand. This provides a clutter-free way of having your arrows accessible and right by your side.
The best hip quiver for you should be dependent on its function and purpose. If you’re hunting, you don’t want a loose hip quiver that bumps into everything and makes noise while you’re out in the field.
Overall, you can’t go wrong with any of these five hip quivers. Each of them offers some fantastic features and benefits.
Our standout is the Easton Flipside 3-Tube Hip Quiver. This quiver comes in various colors and stores up to 18 arrows which are fantastic for the generous price point.
